About

We will visit Omachi City in Nagano Prefecture, about an hour's drive from Nagano Station.

Here, clean water has been gushing out from eight springs over the course of 20 years in the Northern Alps, a chain of mountains over 3,000 meters above sea level.

Because the water is warmed by the three lakes known as the "Ninna Sanko" (Three Lakes of Nishina), rice cultivation has flourished here since ancient times, despite the cold climate. There are also records that the area was a manor of Ise Shrine from the late Heian period (around the 10th century).

Come experience the atmosphere of those days at Nishina Shinmei Shrine, a designated national treasure.

Omachi also has a story related to water.

"In the eastern part of the region, water came from a water source called Iyarizato in Higashiyama, while in the western part it was the spring water from Shirasawa in the Northern Alps. As a result, only girls were being born in the eastern villages, and only boys were being born in the western villages. Before long, people began calling the Iyarizato water Onna-mizu (female spring water) and the Shirasawa water Otoko-mizu (male spring water).

So the people decided to combine the two bodies of water and build a river through the middle of the town.

As you stroll through the city, where old houses remain, try some Otoko-shimizu and Onna-shimizu.

On this tour, we will tell you about the history of this region, which has been blessed with the blessings of the mountains and water since ancient times, and introduce you to the appeal of sake made from the region's high-quality water.
